Coastal's Interview with Robert Mills - The Bachelor / Bachelorette

Mr. Robert Mills
First of all, you don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to and it is fine with us......as it is fine for you to expand on your answers or to give messages to your fans on areas that we haven’t covered in the questions.

Obviously since the first season of The Bachelor things have changed.  What did you like about the first few seasons that you wish you could go back to....ie: How the dates were done?  The logistics of scheduling for large groups without all the attention you are getting now?  Or was there anything in the first few years that you wish you could go back to?
Well I actually didn’t get involved with the show until Lorenzo’s season, so I wasn’t there for the early seasons but I certainly remember when the show started and those early seasons.  I don’t think there is anything to ever go back to in terms of earlier seasons.  I think we look at every season and see what worked and what didn’t and use that info going forward

With the popularity that the Bachelor and Bachelorette are getting, how far can you see the franchise going?  What are your commitments with regards to filming for the next how many years?
I honestly believe the show will be on the air as long as there is an ABC network.  To me, “The Bachelor” is to TV what James Bond is to movies.  It’s a brand, a franchise.  When you say the word Bachelor now, the first thing you think of is now a single man or woman but a TV show about a single man or woman who is dating 25 people in hopes of finding their soulmate.  Just like James Bond we reboot with a new lead all the time and the show is bigger than any one person on it.  And like James Bond where you look forward to the action, the gadgets, the stunts, the women, etc. on “The Bachelor” you look forward to the dates, the women (or men), the rose ceremony, the 2 on 1 date, etc.  Also, I think we have the most loyal fans on TV.  As long as we keep putting our love and passion into making “The Bachelor,” they will be there

Of all the seasons, which one was your favorite and why?
Boy, that’s a tough one.  It’s easier to think of the two I didn’t really like.

In the 10 years of the Bachelor/ette, you have filmed in many destinations:  Are there any others that you wish to visit in upcoming seasons of the series?  Are there some that you wish you can re-visit and do different things at those locations?
I loved Tahiti on Ali’s season and I would love for us to go back there.  There are one or two continents we haven’t made it to that I would love to see on the show.  We have the most amazing cameraman men who make “The Bachelor” the best looking show on TV, so there are a lot of amazing places that would look incredible.  It’s funny, the travel is still relatively new to the show and I think there are a lot of places for “The Bachelor” to explore!

Have there been times in the franchise history that you have incorporated fan's ideas into the shows?  If not, would you?
I don’t think so we have incorporated fans ideas, but YES we would.  The fans are the silent producers on the show and the beauty of things like Twitter are they make it easier to interact and get feedback on what they want to see on the show.

When scouting for locations to shoot, have you used people not associated with the show to scout out the locations?
No, we have amazing producers who go out and scout locations and who know what will work and what won’t for the show.

This year, Bachelor Canada is having their inaugural season....Considering the Bachelor fanbase up here, how do you think the show will do?  Do you have any advice for the producers of Bachelor Canada?
I think Bachelor Canada will be huge!  The reaction when it was announced by Chris Harrison was so big.  I’m excited to see it myself.  I actually met the producers.  They came to visit the Bachelorette set in North Carolina.  They really know what they’re doing, so I don’t think there is much advice to give them except cast the show well.  Cast it well and let everything else take care of itself.  It always does!

Since you have been in Canada filming during Jillian’s season and knowing that there was a lot you haven’t covered up here, would you consider coming back?  If so, would you consider some fan’s thoughts on the areas that you could film at?
Would love to come back to Canada.  Obviously, it’s been very good to the show.  I definitely think of Jillian as a good luck charm!  Let us know where we should hit up!

What made you decide to open up the Bachelor Pad 3 to regular fans who have never been on this show before? Is it going to be a Fan vs Favorites type of season?
I think a big reason was to shake things up a bit.  Have some people in The Pad that have never been to the reunions, met anyone from the show, etc.  I think it will be an interesting and fun dynamic.  We are still working on the creative, so don’t know if I would call it a Fans v Favorites season yet, but I can tell you this season should raise the bar quite a bit!

Watching your gag reels and reading your tweets, it seems like you all have a great time together:  Can you tell us some of your best memories of the series?  And which memories you’d like to forget.
All my memories of the show are good.  I will tell you a special one though.  Mike FIeiss and Martin Hilton, the Executive Producers, are very musical and a lot of times they will play guitar and we will sing and jam to old songs, mostly from the 80s and 90s.  When we shot Ashley’s proposal in Tahiti a group of us were singing and Ashley and J.P., who had been engaged about 5 hours at this point, came and joined us.  It was really casual and they had sweats on.  We sang and they danced and Ashley sat in J.P.’s lap and you could just see two people so in love.  It was a really special moment.
I am incredibly blessed to say I have some small part in “The Bachelor” You would not believe how wonderful and hard working the entire crew is on the show.  It’s really a big family.
